How Pokémon GO CP Works

Understand base stats, IVs, CP multipliers, Pokémon level and why evolution changes combat power.

CP combines species, appraisal and level

Combat Power is a compressed summary of a Pokémon’s battle stats. The number begins with the species form’s base Attack, Defense and Stamina from the Game Master. Your individual Pokémon adds an Attack, Defense and Stamina IV from 0 to 15. A CP multiplier, often shortened to CPM, then scales those totals for the Pokémon’s current level.

Forms matter. A regional, Mega or other alternate form can have a separate Game Master record. Choose the form shown in storage instead of assuming that every Pokémon with the same Pokédex number shares one stat line.

The established CP formula

The player community has validated this calculation against displayed game results:

floor((Base Attack + Attack IV) × √(Base Defense + Defense IV) × √(Base Stamina + Stamina IV) × CPM² ÷ 10)

The game applies a minimum of 10 CP. HP uses a related but simpler calculation: floor((Base Stamina + Stamina IV) × CPM), again with a minimum of 10.

Attack is not square-rooted, while Defense and Stamina are. That heavier Attack weighting explains why Attack IV can consume more of a Great or Ultra League CP budget. A low-Attack appraisal may fit an extra half-level beneath the cap and finish with more total bulk.

Pokémon level and the CP multiplier

The level displayed by calculators is the Pokémon’s level, not the Trainer level. Each power-up advances the Pokémon by one half-level. The CPM rises with level, and the formula squares it, so changing level affects every effective stat and the final CP.

Why evolution changes CP

Normal evolution keeps the Pokémon’s IVs and level but replaces the current species base stats with those of the evolved form. If the plan still works under a conservative assumption, it is more likely to survive normal gameplay variation.
