Calculate at least one drop
For a per-kill chance p and n independent kills, the zero-drop chance is (1 − p) raised to n. The chance of one or more drops is 1 − (1 − p)^n.
At 512 kills for a 1-in-512 item, the chance of at least one is about 63.3 percent—not 100 percent. About 36.7 percent of comparable players would still have zero.
Reverse the question for a target confidence
Instead of asking whether the item should have appeared, choose a confidence such as 50, 90 or 95 percent. Solving the same probability equation returns the number of kills needed to cross that threshold.
A high confidence target can require several times the denominator. Decide the time, supply and attention budget before treating that count as a commitment.
Check how the encounter actually rolls
Some bosses roll several independent tables, have tertiary drops, scale with contribution or use mechanics that are not one simple per-kill event. Enter the specific rate for the item and encounter state documented by the source.
